For this new AERO model, no stone has been left unturned in the hunt for greater efficiency and the result is a design realized with computational fluid dynamics. In keeping true to our design ethos of combining the best from a road and a TT bike, we keep the silhouette of the air sleek and uncluttered as the frame.  We have applied Kamm tail truncated airfoils which mimic deeper airfoils yet remain within the UCI regulations and help ease the notoriously ill ride quality of pure airfoils. This method is frequently used in the car industry, to minimize the aerodynamic drag of the air and is quite notable on the cutaway seattube, which arcs around the rear wheel.  Not to worry, there’s sufficient clearance to use a 25c tire in front and rear.

The top tube has a custom aero seatpost with the clamp sitting flush. The integrated seat clamp is neat enough, if no longer revolutionary (Wilier, Fondriest, and Scott use a similar design). Internally, however, there’s a wedge that expands inside the seat tube, which along with the clamp, represents a belt and braces approach to the challenge of securing a flattened seat pin. The internal cable routing not only gives a cleaner look, but is more aerodynamic. Because of internal sleeves, the internal cable routing is easy to set up.

The low-sitting seat stays (as low as UCI regulations will allow), have also been designed to reduce wind resistance while providing a shroud for a standard rear brake, and the oversized asymmetric chainstays have been adapted to facilitate a wider BB386 Evo bottom for greater pedal efficiency. The 386 press fit bottom bracket is housed in a substantial shell that rises to a squared-off junction of seattube and downtube. The 86mm standard is compatible with all cranksets (notably, Shimano), but only FSA’s 386EVO crankset utilizes its capacity for a 30mm axle.

The frame incorporates a tapered headtube and integrated aerodynamic “twin blade” fork that’s designed to aid airflow and reduce air turbulence (and, therefore, drag) that is wider than usual. The greater width is not only more effective in the wind but that it also provides greater stability and control. With a lowered down tube, the fork crown sits gracefully in the frame’s silhouette. The integration of fork crown and headtube is one of the more impressive features.

We seem to have succeeded in creating a frame which is exceptionally stiff with no discernible flex from that bottom bracket, whether sprinting hard or climbing out of the saddle. The frame’s stiffness means it reacts well to changes in pace and gradient. When you really turn on the power, the stiffer platform enhances the raw acceleration. It’s over long miles and rough road where the CFR5 really impresses. The aero road platform, industry wide, is no longer the ill-mannered beast it once was, but the CFR5 takes it to the next level. This aero road bike is smoother than many pure road racers and while big hits still make it through, they are not the vicious filling rattlers many aero bikes still communicate. The bike’s custom aero seat post, influenced by the design of Ritchey, and the lowered chain stays must allow plenty of seat cluster deflection when necessary. Aero gains with essentially zero sacrifice in ride quality!

The response at the pedals is magic, the confident handling at speed is perfection and the road feel is spot on, just right for long days and a rapid pace.
